The Guitar Circle New England plays new music, both composed and improvised, born of the listening of the audience. It employs compositions ranging in influence from Bach to Bartok, King Crimson to Phillip Glass, and it explores both strategic and spontaneous improvisation. In its approach to the guitar, the Circle practices the principles of Guitar Craft, as founded by Robert Fripp. This approach has allowed the Circle to embody an undeniably creative force: Music. A performance with the Circle is a truly unique experience, one shaped by all who are present.
The first meeting of the original circle project was held on Saturday, October 7th 2000 at 10:30 AM.
Currently the GCNE addresses three lines of work in an ongoing way.
1stly: To provide collective support for people with Guitar Craft and New Standard Tuning experience. Experience shows that working in a collective way speeds progress and diminishes several constraints.
2ndly: To provide information and instruction for personal study. The Circle is lead by Victor McSurely who has a good deal of experience in the New Standard Tuning work, in addition, as the years have gone by, the number of circle members with information and guidance to offer has grown.
3rdly: To provide service. The Circle makes itself available as a way for music to change the world. Those interested in events where this takes place should look at the GCNE calendar.
